Friends of the Library
February News
Our current project, collecting and publishing moonshine stories, is coming along very well. Our members have interviewed several local people and transcribed their stories. We have also found several old newspaper articles about moonshiners and revenuers in the county. One article, from 1879, describes a group of revenuers who tracked a whiskey-making operation to a cave in the eastern part of Clay County and arrested the ‘illegal distillers.’ Another article, from 2009, tells of the ruthless methods of one revenue agent who operated in this area in the early 1900s.
The moonshine stories publication will be sold at Moonshine Daze, on the square in Celina, May 3rd through 6th, 2012. You can find them on the web at www.claycountymoonshinedaze.webs.com. Money from the sale will be used to fund Friends of the Library scholarships to graduating Clay County seniors who are going on to college.
Friends of the Library is also planning our popular Chili Lunch on Friday, March 16th. We will be serving at the Celina Methodist Church from 11:00 to 1:00, and delivering to local businesses during that same time. Though we are a small organization, FOL has great support from the community for our lunches, and that support is greatly appreciated. All of our chili is donated by supporters.
We are also supporting the Library Teen Night by contributing the food for this very popular monthly event.
Needless to say, we rely heavily on community support for our projects. If you wish to contribute to the cost of buying food and drinks for Teen Night, for buying drinks and condiments for the Chili Lunch, or for helping pay for having the Moonshine Stories published, please contact one of the following:
