American Legion Clay County Post 18, under Post Commander John Teeples, thanks Clay County for the wonderful community support for our First Annual Veterans Day Display, and the understanding for missing names. Last year we planned to put small flags on veteran’s graves in Clay County. But with over 270 cemeteries in the county, and some far from the beaten path, the recognition for those veterans might have gone unnoticed by most everyone. So we decided to bring the names together at our County Seat.

We used the books written and published by the Clay County Genealogical Committee: Clay County, Tennessee Cemeteries, Volumes I and II. They documented the hundreds of cemeteries in Clay County and noted graves with known military service. We asked Upton and Hall Funeral Homes for names of those veterans buried after the books were published. We didn’t ask for names from the other funeral homes in the area, but we plan to next time. Clay County High School’s Agriculture Shop helped by making some of the crosses and Celina Lumber Company, Tri-County Electric Membership Corporation, and Joey’s Flowers and Gifts made donations of some materials we needed. Twin Lakes Telephone Cooperative Corporation printed the names, branch of service and the conflicts.

At our Veterans Day table we got over 80 omitted names from family and friends of veterans buried in our county to be included at the next display. We’ve also talked with Ike Dyer about coordinating the display of the crosses during his Memorial Day ceremony.

With patriotism and honor-
Clay County Post 18
